What to say:

  • “I am sorry that this happened to you.”
  • “It was not your fault.”
  • “You survived; you did the right things.”
  • “Thank you for telling me.”
  • “I am always here if you want to talk.”
  • “Can I do anything for you?” or “Is there anything you need?”

 

What NOT to say:

  • “I don’t believe you.”
  • “It was your fault.”
  • “You shouldn’t have ________” or “you could have avoided it if you had _______.”
  • “Get over it.”
  • “It’s not that big of a deal.”
  • “You were asking for it” or “you must have wanted it.”
